The Biochemistry program is about fearless explorations of wonders at the interface of biology and chemistry.
Under the direction of Dr. Xiao-Ning Zhang, the program provides a basic understanding of living systems that emphasizes the molecular and cellular aspects of biology.
The Biochemistry program is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. All of our Biochemistry graduates have achieved ASBMB certification, an assurance that they have the knowledge and understanding of core competencies in biochemistry and molecular biology. The majority of our graduates have achieved certification with distinction, placing them in the top 13% of Biochemistry graduates nationwide who have participated ASBMB certification exams.
Research equipment & facilities
A new biotechnology and molecular genetics lab equipped with nanodrop spectrophotometer, various centrifuges, ThermoCyclers (including real-time), DNA, RNA and protein electrophoresis equipment, gel imaging system, cell culture hoods, confocal and regular fluorescent microscopes, etc. provides the technical component for the program and affords research opportunities for the students during their junior and/or senior years. The final year of study features independent laboratory research.
Career paths for Biochemistry Majors
Advances in the area of biochemistry and molecular biology have led to expanded job opportunities in the general field of biotechnology. The Biochemistry major is of special interest to students with a strong science and mathematics background who are preparing for graduate school, medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, law school, or employment in a biotech company.
STEM-designated program
This program meets the requirements for STEM designation, as determined by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers are among the fastest-growing and highest-demand fields worldwide. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in STEM occupations is expected to grow by 10.4% from 2023 to 2033 — significantly faster than other professions.
For international students, St. Bonaventure offers unique advantages. Pursuing a STEM degree here qualifies F1 visa holders for Optional Practical Training (OPT), including the opportunity for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. This means you could gain up to three years of practical experience in the U.S., enhancing your career prospects in global job markets.
